A fundraiser for legend local filmmaker David Bradbury to return to Cuba.

6:30 - 9:00 pm Wednesday 11 March, 2026.

Legend local filmmaker David Bradbury is leaving in two weeks for Cuba with his two children, Nakeita (23) and Omar (16) to shoot social media posts and a feature length doco they will be sending back to the Byron community via the online Echo as Trump's next plans unfold to take over the island.

As a fund raiser to help David and his kids pay for the trip, Bradbury is having a screening of a film he made on Cuba 20 years ago - Fond Memories of Cuba - which still stands the test of time. The film is laced with lots of great music and dance...and has loads of Cuba's proud fighting spirit. Which they surely need now with a total oil blockade by Trump, bringing the island to a grinding halt - little or no electricity for hospitals, schools, public transport, water and sewerage treatment works; rubbish piling up in the streets which proud, starving Cubans are forced to rummage through for food scraps because food is too expensive for average Cubans or not available.

Fond Memories was made in 1999, on the eve of the 40th anniversary of the Revolution when life was still hard for average Cubans but much better than now under Trump.

Bradbury took his then 9 year old son Dylan with him and captures one of the best and humorous moments in the film. Toni, their Cuban guide, an old revolutionary and famous radio journalist is confronted by a Cuban militia accusing him of working for the CIA and engaging in germ warfare when Toni tried to pluck a stick of sugar cane from the field to give to young Dylan. "I love sugar cane, Dadda!"

Whatever occurs while Bradbury is there, he's sure to return with a great film in the Can. Your donation or coming to the fundraiser at the Old Drill Hall, Mullum, Wednesday night next week (March 11th) can help pull that off. Doors open at 6:30pm. David is grateful to the Old Drill Hall for helping with the fundraiser.
